Life Cycle Assessment

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) measures the environmental impact of a product’s materials, production, transport, use and end of life.

In 2003, Steelcase was the 1st company in the office furniture industry to carry out Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) when designing new products. At each phase, materials, production, transport, use and end-of-life, the LCA measures the quantity of energy & resources needed, as well as the impacts on air, water and soil.

All our major products…

The results allow us to make informed environmental decisions at every stage of the product’s life and avoid the transfers of pollution from one stage to another. This, in turn, helps our customers to make informed product choices based on their own sustainability goals.

We use ISO 14044, which is an internationally recognized framework for performing LCAs and selected by the European Union for environmental evaluation.
Transparency and objectivity…

This scientific process measures impact against 8 global environmental parameters considered throughout the product life cycle:

  • Global warming
  • Ozone depletion
  • Acidification
  • Eutrophication
  • Photochemical smog
  • Abiotic resource depletion
  • Waste
  • Toxic substances.

Leading the way in environmental transparency

The results are published in an independently validated Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) based on ISO 14025.
